Margaret discovered a love of the landscape, how it evolved and how humans have impacted on it while training to be a teacher and studying geography. She loved teaching art to young children, how to mix colours and how to look and more importantly, how to see. Children are not afraid to throw paint at the paper and just paint freely with no fear of getting it wrong. On leaving teaching she had two goals in mind. One was to learn how to paint like a grown up and the other was to research her family history. Starting with water colours and then acrylics she developed a style which was representational and impressionistic, whilst striving to become more abstract. Learning oil and cold wax techniques is developing a more abstract result. Researching her ancestry reignited an interest in local history and led to a course at Oxford University, The two interests combined into a deep connection with the landscape here in Lincolnshire and in the Derbyshire Peak District. Margaret’s aim is to represent the landscape, the feeling of the place, its layers of history, human and geological, and also to paint like a child with no fear. |
